Man charged with DUI after crashing into school bus
HAMPSHIRE – A Crystal Lake man was charged with driving under the influence after crashing into a school bus on Thursday afternoon.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release that Paul Koontz, 30, crashed into a school bus on Allen and New Lebanon Roads and his car was wedged under the rear of the bus. Hampshire fire officials helped Koontz out of the and Koontz was then taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin.
There was only one child on the bus, along with the driver, at the time of the crash, the release said. The driver and child were uninjured and both vehicles were towed from the scene, the release said.
Koontz was later charged with DUI and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, according to the release. He was released on a recognizance bond with his own signature.
St. Joseph’s nursing staff declined comment on whether Koontz was still at the hospital or his current condition, citing HIPPA.
The incident remains under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
