LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Landon Donovan, Brad Friedel and Claudio Reyna were selected Thursday as the finalists for the Honda player of the year award, given annually to the top player on the U.S. national team.
Donovan, a 20-year-old midfielder and forward, had two goals at the World Cup, the youngest player to score at the tournament. He had six goals overall and became the youngest finalist for the award.
Friedel stopped a pair of penalty kicks and the World Cup and played all five games for the Americans, who advanced to the quarterfinals, where they lost to Germany 1-0.
Reyna, a midfielder and the U.S. captain, became the first American named to a World Cup All-Star team. He won the Honda award in 2000 and was runner-up to Earnie Stewart last year.
The finalists were chosen in a vote by 277 media. The winner will be announced Oct. 8.
