ATLANTA (AP) _ Goalie Norm Maracle was one of 18 players cut by the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday and reassigned to Orlando of the IHL.
Maracle reported to training camp out of shape last year, underachieved in his first season and then reported to camp this year at 12 pounds over his target weight.
``I still think Norm Maracle, skill-wise, is a goaltender capable of playing in the NHL,″ Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said. ``But until he makes a commitment to himself and to us, we’re not going to provide him with another opportunity, like we did last year.″
Maracle could be claimed in the waiver draft in two weeks.
Milan Hnilicka, Scott Fankhouser and Scott Langkow are still competing for the backup job behind Damian Rhodes.
The team also has talked with unrestricted free agent Mikhail Shtalenkov.
