Valerie Reyes’ homicide in Greenwich: What we know

May 6, 2019

Valerie Reyes, who lived in New Rochelle, N.Y., was reported missing by her family in January.

Her body was found Feb. 5 by a town Department of Public Workers employee off the side of Glenville Road in Greenwich.

A public worker foreman photographed her body. He was disciplined, not fired, for taking the photos.

Reyes’ former boyfriend, Javier Da Silva, also 24, was arrested Feb. 12, the day before her funeral Mass.

Da Silva holds dual citizenship in Venezuela and Portugal. He was working as a barista in New York City.

Reyes and Da Silva had dated for several months in 2017, after meeting through a dating website

Da Silva told police that Reyes fell and hit her head either during or after the two had sex in her New Rochelle apartment on Jan. 29

According to the federal complaint, Da Silva bound her ankles and wrists, covered her mouth with tape, stuffed her body into a suitcase and dumped it in Greenwich.

He bound her body, he told the New York Post, because “she didn’t fit in the suitcase.”

On Monday, May 6, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington said Reyes’ cause of death was ruled as “homicidal asphyxia.”

It did not detail how it arrived at that determination.

A plea deal with De Silva may be in the works.

In a New York Post jail interview, Da Silva offered remorse and apologies:

He said “sorry” more than two dozen times.

“I don’t know what happened. I didn’t mean to do it.”

“I’m a bad person.”

“I did something wrong. I didn’t call the police because I thought they would blame me.”

He offered one last apology — to the grieving Reyes family, “I’m sorry for the pain.”
