Reading Volunteers Wanted
BRIDGEPORT — The School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. is seeking volunteers for its 33rd annual Read Aloud Day in city schools.
The event takes place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday Oct. 18. Some 650 volunteers who live and work in the greater Bridgeport community share their love of reading with every prekindergarten through sixth grade class in Bridgeport’s Public Schools. About 100 spots are left.
The organization provides the books which are donated to the classroom libraries after they are read. No prior experience is necessary. Register by calling 203-275-1120.
Whether this will be the last Read Aloud Day for the district remains to be seen. The Volunteer Association, which in also supplies volunteers year round to the district, runs on a two-person staff. Its funding was cut by the school board this year. The organization is using reserves to keep the program going for one more year but will cease to exist unless funding is restored in the 2019-20 budget, the school board was told on Monday.
