Hy-Vee acquires Shopko pharmacy business

Starting Dec. 19, Shopko pharmacies across Southeast Minnesota will begin closing as part of a buyout of those pharmacies by Hy-Vee.

The Shopko Pharmacy at 2820 U.S. Highway 63 South, located near Menards, will close on Dec. 19. The north Shopko Pharmacy at 2708 U.S. 63 North near Chateau Theatre, will close Jan. 7.

All affected Shopko pharmacy patients will receive a letter from their new Hy-Vee Pharmacy with details, according to a statement on the Hy-Vee Corporate website.

Shopko has sold the business of 22 of its pharmacies in 17 cities across six states. Those prescriptions and the pharmacy business has been sold to Hy-Vee in those cities. The buyout includes Shopko pharmacies and Hy-Vee pharmacies in Rochester, Austin and Winona.

Shopko’s regular retail businesses will remain open.

The Austin and Winona Shopko pharmacies will close on Jan 8. and Jan. 3, respectively.

In Rochester, the south Shopko Pharmacy’s business will be taken over the next day by the Crossroads Hy-Vee. The north Shopko Pharmacy’s business will be taken over by the Hy-Vee Pharmacy at 37th Street Northwest

As part of the acquisition, Shopko patient files will merge into existing Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations in the 17 cities where the acquisitions have taken place, according to a statement on the Hy-Vee website.

“As we continue to grow our pharmacy business, we pride ourselves on providing an excellent experience to our customers,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman of the board, CEO and president. “Our pharmacists will go above and beyond to provide numerous services to our patients so we can help them understand and assist with caring for their specific health care needs.”
