Tips for Preventing Diabetes

New government guidelines released Wednesday recommend that millions of middle-aged people get tested during their next regular visit to the doctor to see if they have either ``pre-diabetes″ or the full disease. Doctors should consider testing adults 45 and younger if they are significantly overweight and have one or more of the following risk factors:

_a family history of diabetes.

_low HDL, or good, cholesterol, and high triglycerides.

_high blood pressure.

_a history of gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds.

_belong to a minority group _ African-Americans, American Indians, Hispanics, Latinos, Asian-Americans, or Pacific Islanders.
