Springfield man charged with beating octogenarian

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A 19-year-old Springfield man police say broke into a home and severely beat a man in his 80s has been held on $100,000 bail.

Patrick Donovan pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Thursday to charges including assault with intent to murder, home invasion and assault and battery on a person over the age of 60 while causing serious injury.

The victim remains hospitalized with head and face injuries that are not considered life threatening.

Police allege Donovan broke into the home in the city’s Forest Park neighborhood at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, claimed he had a gun and demanded all the residents’ money. The victim tried to fight back but was beaten.

Donovan was tied to the scene through fingerprint evidence and a description from the victim’s wife.
