BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - DeMarco Johnson scored 18 points and Alexander Keuhl had 11 rebounds to lead N.C. Charlotte past Canisius 54-51 in a non-conference game Saturday night.

Kevin Thompson had a game-high 19 points for Canisius (2-6). Ryan Collins pulled down nine rebounds.

Canisius trailed 15-10 midway through the first half, but chipped away and took a 26-24 halftime lead on a pair of Thompson free throws and a layup by Jamie Cammaert.

Roderick Howard scored the first eight points of the second half for the 49ers, giving them a 32-26 lead with 18:23 left.

N.C. Charlotte (5-3) eventually took a 45-36 lead on a put-back by Keuhl. Canisius fought back and tied the score 51-51 on a 3-point shot by Thompson with 1:43 to go.

A bank shot by Johnson with 1:23 left gave the 49ers a 53-51 lead. Canisius had four chances to tip home the tying basket with 20 seconds remaining, but none fell.

A Sean Colson free throw raised the advantage to 54-51 with 9.2 seconds left. Ryan Collins' 3-point shot at the buzzer failed to hit the rim.
