Powell Helps Charter Agassi Club
LAS VEGAS (AP) _ Retired Gen. Colin Powell helped officially charter the Andre Agassi Boys and Girls Club _ the nation’s 2,000th such club _ 138 years after the first one opened.
``People around the country can see the need for places like this,″ Powell said Tuesday.
The first Boys Club of America opened in Hartford, Conn., in 1860.
The club here first opened in 1990. Agassi, a tennis star who lives in Las Vegas, raised money through his foundation for a new $2.2 million club, which opened in public housing in April 1997.
Powell noted that the cinderblocks, steel and other materials in the gym at the club were the same used to build prisons. Instead of building prisons, he said, America should concentrate on building lives.
