Telly Award-Winning “Story in the Public Square” Program Has Expanded Weekly Broadcasts

November 12, 2018

NEWPORT, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 12, 2018--The Telly Award-winning series “Story in the Public Square” has expanded its broadcasting in major markets across America. The show now airs in 20 of the top 25 markets across America, 37 of the top 50 markets and 66 of the top 100.

A partnership of The Providence Journal and the Pell Center at Salve Regina University, the program provides insights and perspectives into culture, politics and current national and international events from diverse storytellers of every variety and in any media—from acclaimed journalists, filmmakers, authors, photographers, scholars, activists, historians, musicians and more.

“Story in the Public Square” is a weekly 30-minute public television program that tries to make sense of the stories shaping public life in the United States and abroad. The show is hosted by G. Wayne Miller, Staff Writer at The Providence Journal and Jim Ludes, Executive Director of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University.

“While we explore topics of significance to us as individuals and fellow citizens of a complex world, we are also mindful that the best discussions are not only spirited but often fun, “ Miller said. “Story in the Public Square has built a strong audience in the southern New England market, and we expect viewers coast-to-coast will embrace it as well. And it certainly will help build the GateHouse Media brand, as GateHouse has a strong presence in many of these same regions.”

“We created this show to shine a light on some of the unspoken assumptions and unconsidered myths that dominate public life in the United States,” said Ludes. The program won a 2018 Telly Award for excellence in general politics/commentary for the final episode of its first year on the air on Rhode Island PBS, and the program is supported by weekly podcast versions and Miller’s regular Inside Story columns for The Providence Journal.

Thirteen guests are appearing on the first national season of Story in the Public Square, with national season two set to begin in January. Upcoming programs include Daphne Matziaraki and her Academy Award-nominated short documentary about the refugee crisis in Europe and CJ Chivers, New York Times staff writer, Pulitzer winner and author of the recent best-selling book, “The Fighters: Americans in Combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

The audio version of the series is broadcast multiple times each weekend on SiriusXM’s P.O.T.U.S. (Politics of the United States) channel.
