DOHA, Qatar (AP) _ The U.S. Embassy in Qatar reopened Saturday after being closed down last week for security reasons, an embassy official said.

``We closed because we were reassessing our security posture and we decided to reopen today,'' embassy spokeswoman Aleta Wenger said.

Security around the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Doha, has been intensified over the last several weeks.

U.S. forces in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were placed on the highest alert level following the Oct. 12 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors and injured 39 others in Yemen's seaport of Aden. In addition, several embassies and consulates in the Middle East, Africa and Asia were temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.
