Ashford Castle Wins Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Ashford Castle took the lead in the final eighth of a mile and then held off Northern Silver to post a half-length win in Wednesday’s $53,840 feature for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up at Churchill Downs.

The victory with Shane Sellers aboard was the second in four starts this season for Ashford Castle as she covered the mile on firm turf in 1:35 4-5 and paid $9, $4.80 and $4.20. Northern Silver rallied four wide in the stretch and paid $10.80 and $6. Lords Guest closed from sixth at the top of the lane to finish another 2 1/4 lengths back under Craig Perret and paid $9.

Owned by Tori Ashford, Ashford Castle collected $35,660 for the win to boost her career total to $119,304. The 4-year-old daughter of Bates Motel collected her first win on the turf as she improved her career record to four wins in 12 starts with four second-place efforts.
