Newspapers Seek More Readers

NEW YORK (AP) _ Newspaper industry groups are jointly developing a plan to boost readership at a time of explosive growth in media choices.

The Newspaper Association of America, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Newspaper Management Center of Northwestern University and the McCormick Tribune Foundation hope to have a five-year proposal set by May.

The plan would then be presented to the entire newspaper industry to initiate a collaborative effort to increase readership, the groups said in a statement Thursday.

The NAA reported in November that 58.6 percent of adults read a daily newspaper _ a figure that has remained steady over the past two years amid growing competition from cable news channels and the Internet.

But overall newspaper circulation declined slightly from April through September last year, according to an NAA calculation of figures culled by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

The NAA is a nonprofit group representing more than 1,700 newspapers in North America. ASNE is the nation’s oldest and largest newspaper editors group. The NMC, founded in 1989, is an educational program for media executives. The McCormick Tribune Foundation provides grants for journalism and other causes.
