McGee Wins Giro D’Italia Prologue
GENOA, Italy (AP) _ Australia’s Bradley McGee won the prologue of the Giro d’Italia, one of cycling’s biggest races.
McGee completed the 4.2-mile individual time test through the streets of this port city on Saturday in 8 minutes, 30 seconds. He was 10 seconds ahead of Olaf Pollack of Germany and eight ahead of Yaroslav Popovych of Ukraine.
Defending champion Gilberto Simoni, going for his third title in four years, trailed the winner by 35 seconds.
McGee will wear the pink jersey in Sunday’s first stage from Genoa to Alba, an 89-mile run on flat terrain. The 20-leg race ends in Milan on May 30.
Italy’s Mario Cipollini, who holds the record of 42 stage wins at the Giro, was timed in 9:05. World road champion Igor Astarloa of Spain was 75th, nearly one minute behind.
