Corretja Knocks Out Hrbaty

May 12, 2000

ROME (AP) _ Twenty-four hours after knocking out top-ranked Andre Agassi, Slovakia’s Dominik Hrbaty lost in straight sets today to Alex Corretja in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open.

Spain’s Corretja, the No. 10 seed, rolled 6-1, 7-6 (5), using heavy top spin to counter the hard-hitting No. 15 seed. Hrbaty double faulted on match point, just as Agassi had done the day before.

Corretja, the 1998 French Open runner-up and 1997 Italian Open champion, advances to the semifinals, where he lost last year to eventual winner Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil.

Also today, No. 3 seed Magnus Norman of Sweden rolled over Felix Mantilla of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

The other quarterfinal matchups slated were Kuerten, the No. 4 seed, vs. Albert Costa of Spain, and Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt vs. Mariano Puerta of Argentina.

On Thursday, Agassi failed to raise his game and find that ``other level,″ falling 6-4, 6-4 to Hrbaty in the third round. The American lost in just over an hour, drawing disapproving whistles from the capacity center court crowd at the Foro Italico.

``If a match goes like this a couple weeks from now, it’s a big problem,″ Agassi acknowledged, looking ahead to May 29 and defending his championship in the French Open.
