WASHINGTON (AP) _ Jorge Dely Valdes' goal broke a tie in the 74th minute as the Colorado Rapids beat D.C. United 2-1 Saturday night in a match between MLS conference leaders.

Valdes got a step on United defender Brian Kamler at the top of the penalty area. When Kamler offered little resistance, Valdes broke through and scored on a soft shot beneath goalie Tom Presthus. It was Valdes' seventh goal of the year.

Colorado improved to 6-3 on the road and has one more road victory than it did last season.

Eastern Conference-leading D.C. (12-7), which has lost four of six games, tied the game about two minutes earlier on a goal by A.J. Wood. Following Geoff Aunger's cross from the left side, Wood hit the last of a series of three headers, bouncing the ball into an open net to ruin Rapids goalie Ian Feuer's shutout bid.

Joey DiGiamarino gave Colorado (12-4), which has won five of seven and leads the Western Conference, a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.

Valdes corralled the rebound of an errant D.C. corner kick from the left side and sprung DiGiamarino with a long lead pass. DiGiamarino sped past defender Jeff Agoos and converted a low shot from the top of the penalty area.

DiGiamarino's goal came about nine minutes after an apparent goal by D.C.'s Roy Lassiter was disallowed because Lassiter was ruled offsides.

Feuer made five saves, three of them in the second half. D.C. had six chances in the final five minutes, but could not come up with the equalizer.

Colorado, which dropped its first five regular-season matches against United, has now won two straight over D.C.
