Tokyo Stocks Down
TOKYO (AP) _ Tokyo stocks fell early Monday in light trading. The dollar was higher against the yen.
The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 46.80 points, or 0.35 percent, to 13,338.92 at the start of the morning session. On Friday, the average closed up 33.28 points, or 0.2 percent.
The dollar bought 124.64 yen in early trading, up 0.40 yen from late Friday in Tokyo. Currency markets, including New York and London, were closed Friday ahead of Easter.
On the stock market, the Nikkei index moved lower in subdued trading.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index of all issues listed on the first section was down 2.51 points, or 0.19 percent, to 1,296.69 Monday. The TOPIX ended down 2.13 points, or 0.2 percent, on Friday.
In currency dealings, the greenback edged up against the yen on mild dollar-buying by Japanese banks.
In other currencies, the euro was traded at 110.82 yen, up from 110.68 yen late Friday in Tokyo.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond rose to 1.4500 percent from Friday’s finish of 1.4350 percent. Its price fell 0.13 point to 96.96.
