Services pending for toddler run over by car

May 20, 2013

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — Funeral services are pending for a 1-year-old girl who East St. Louis police say was run over by a car after a boy sitting in the vehicle started the engine and put it into gear.

Investigators are calling Jay’lah Keith’s death Saturday afternoon an accident.

Police say an 11-year-old boy took his mother’s car keys without her knowledge and climbed in the vehicle to listen to music before a 12-year-old boy who joined him turned the car on and put it into gear.

Police Chief Michael Floore says it’s too early to say if the boys will face criminal charges.

The victim’s grandmother, Elverita Graham, tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/10PAJXi) that the girl, her parents and three siblings live in Belleville and were visiting Saturday as they regularly do.
