Hard Buck Wins River City Handicap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Hard Buck passed Warleigh in the final furlong to win by a half-length Sunday in the $173,500 River City Handicap at Churchill Downs.

The Brazilian-bred son of 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend A Buck, ridden by Brice Blanc, covered the 1 1/8 miles on the turf in 1:51.60 and paid $25.20, $10.20 and $7.60. Warleigh paid $4.60 and $4.20. Rowans Park was third and returned $6.20 in the race for 3-year-olds and up.

Hard Buck, trained by Ken McPeek, earned $107,136 for Jose Carlos Carnevale’s Team Victory I. The colt has won eight of 13 starts and is unbeaten in three starts in the United States.
