Soccer: Saprissa Defeats Fire 2-0
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) _ Costa Rica’s Saprissa got goals from Andres Nunez and Alonso Solis in a 2-0 victory Wednesday night over the Chicago Fire in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals.
Playing with a home-field advantage at San Jose’s National Stadium, Saprissa overcame the expulsion of Victor Cordero at 29 minutes.
While Chicago dominated the first 25 minutes of play, midfielder Chris Armas was expelled at 31 minutes, evening the squads at 10 apiece. Chicago manager Dave Sarachan was expelled for protesting that call.
The Major League Soccer team’s luck ran out at 50 minutes, when Nunez fired a shot past two Chicago defenders that rang in near the right post.
Saprissa made it 2-0 at 71 minutes when Solis scored on a long shot.
The teams will play the second leg April 21 in Chicago.
