Maine Moose Festival is site of drawing for hunting permits

June 9, 2018

SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) — Maine hunters will soon find out if they are among hundreds of sportsmen who will have a chance to bag a moose this fall.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is holding the drawing for the moose permit lottery on Saturday in Skowhegan as part of the Moose Festival. The state is looking to increase the number of moose permits by more than 20 percent to 2,500 this year.

The odds of getting a moose permit are still low because the moose lottery typically attracts tens of thousands of applicants. More than 54,000 applied this year. The drawing is taking place at Skowhegan Fairgrounds.

The state says it uses the hunt to manage the size of the moose population. Moose are also popular with wildlife watchers.
