First Iraq War veteran to lead NY American Legion sworn in
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — The American Legion in New York has sworn in its 100th commander and for the first time, it’s an Iraq War veteran.
Gary Schacher of Cobleskill was sworn in in Rochester over the weekend. He is a 26-year U.S. Navy veteran who served in Fallujah from 2004 to 2005.
He succeeds Rena Nessler, who was the first female commander of the American Legion Department of New York.
Schacher was vice commander from 2014 to 2015 and was most recently the veterans’ organization’s membership chairman.
