King, Queen To Become Grandparents
MADRID, Spain (AP) _ It was the biggest news in Spain for a day _ King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia are going to be grandparents for the first time.
The state news agency EFE and national radio topped their summaries with the news that Princess Elena, 34, the king and queen’s eldest daughter, is expecting a baby in August.
She has been married to banker Jaime de Marichalar for three years. They live in Paris.
The king, speaking to reporters in Barcelona, quoted his daughter as saying she had kept her promise to him not to make him a grandfather until he was 60. That happened Jan. 5.
The princess, a teacher and skilled equestrian, is second in line to the Spanish throne after her brother Prince Felipe de Asturias, who is single.
The family’s younger daughter, Princess Cristina, is married but childless.
