Clear Creek defeats Clear Brook on last-second field goal
Clear Creek’s Christian Hernandez kicked his third field goal of the game as time expired, giving the Wildcats a 30-27 win over Clear Brook in a District 24-6A football game Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Clear Brook had tied the agme at 27 with 9:11 remaining on a 15-yard run by Michael Norris. The Wolverines later drove deep into Wildcat territory and had a chance to win the game, but Creek managed to halt Brook.
The Wildcats then drove down for Hernandez’s game-winning 31-yard field goal.
Brook led 7-0 in the first quarter on a 7-yard run by Loronzo Thompson before Creek’s Cody Spears tied the game on an 8-yard run. The Wolverines regained the edge at 14-7 when quarterback Shane Porter connected with Thompson on a 3-yard TD pass.
Creek countered with Hunter Smith’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Dry, and Hernandez then kicked the first of his field goals, a 26-yarder, for a 17-14 Wildcat lead with 43 seconds left in the opening half.
Creek widened the gap to 24-14 when Smith threw another touchdown pass to Emilio Allison covering 23 yards with 10:04 left in the third quarter.
Brook chipped into the lead with Thompson’s 8-yard run, but the PAT kick failed, leaving the score at 24-20.
Hernandez then kicked a 36-yard field goal for a 27-20 Creek lead before Norris ran for his touchdown.
The win improved Creek to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district while Brook fell to 1-4 and 0-1.
