Police investigate New Canaan man’s death at Springdale train station

December 31, 2018

STAMFORD — The cause of death of a New Canaan man whose body was found this weekend under the Springdale train station platform remains unknown.

Metro-North has identified the man as 65-year-old Stephen Sugrue, whose body was found late Saturday afternoon.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are still investigating what happened to the 65-year-old, according to a Metro-North spokeswoman. The circumstances of his death are “pending further study,” the state Office of Chief Medical Examiner said Monday.

Stamford police referred questions about the investigation to the MTA police.

A message left at Sugrue’s New Canaan home was not immediately returned.

It was the second time in a month a New Canaan man has died near the tracks.

John Hickey, 50, was killed by a train between the Darien and Norton Heights stations on Dec. 13.
