Steinhauer, Johnson, Dobson, Moriguchi share first-round lead
OTSU, Japan (AP) _ Sherri Steinhauer, fighting for a spot in the LPGA’s season-ending Tour Championship, shot a 5-under-par 67 today for a share of the first-round lead in the Japan Queens Cup.
Steinhauer, $2,185 behind Meg Mallon on the money list for the final spot in the 30-player event Nov. 20-23 at Las Vegas, had six birdies against one bogey on the Seta course. Mallon is not entered in the tournament.
LPGA Championship winner Chris Johnson, England’s Helen Dobson and Japan’s Yuko Moriguchi also shot 67s, while Kris Tschetter was one back along with Swedes Liselotte Neumann and Charlotta Sorenstam, and Japan’s Yoko Inoue. Neumann won the 1991 tournament on the Seta course.
Japan’s Mayumi Hirase, a playoff winner last year over English star Laura Davies, shot a 72. Davies and South Korea’s Ko Woo-soon, the 1994 and 1995 winner, also opened with 72s.
The winner will receive $112,500 from the $750,000 purse.
