Settlement could be near in suit over 2015 police shooting
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi city may be nearing a settlement with heirs of a man killed in a 2015 police shooting.
Senior U.S. District Judge Glen Davidson on Friday dismissed former Columbus officer Canyon Boykin and former police chief Tony Carleton from a federal wrongful death lawsuit filed by heirs of Ricky Ball.
Katherine Kerby, a lawyer for Carleton and the city of Columbus, tells The Commercial Dispatch the city is in settlement talks and the case could end soon.
Boykin says he shot Ball after the 26-year-old black man appeared to point a gun at Boykin during a foot chase. Boykin, who is white, also faces a criminal indictment for manslaughter. That case was postponed last year and hasn’t been rescheduled.
Boykin settled a wrongful termination lawsuit against Columbus last year.
