November 15, 2018

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Community Foundation gave Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois a $1,500 grant for program growth in DeKalb County, according to a news release.

Girls on the Run Northwest Illinois is an after-school program for girls in third through fifth grades. It focuses on building up a girls’ sense of self with topics such as learning how to stand up for yourself and others, how to make healthy life choices and how to deal with bullying and gossip, the release said.

The 10-week and 20-lesson curriculum was developed to proactively address risky behaviors that girls may engage in when they don’t feel confident in themselves, the release said.

The program began serving girls in DeKalb County in 2010 and has seen the program grow from 10 girls in its first season to more than 160 this year. It is expecting to serve more than 1,800 overall this spring within DeKalb, McHenry, Boone and Winnebago counties, according to the release.

For information on how to volunteer, email the program’s executive director Laurie Dayon at ldayon@gotrnwil.org.
