Police investigate Sikh beating, racist scrawl as hate crime

August 6, 2018

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — Police are looking for two men who beat a Sikh man and spray-painted a racist message on his truck in what they’re calling a hate crime.

Fifty-year-old Surjit Malhi tells KOVR-TV on Monday that he was putting up campaign signs when two men ambushed him, throwing sand in his eyes before beating him in the head, shoulders and neck on July 31 in Keyes, California, about an hour and a half south of Sacramento.

Malhi says the men screamed at him to “go back to your country” before spray-painting the same message and a white supremacist symbol on his truck.

He says the men were wearing black hoods and had blue eyes.

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson tells The Modesto Bee that the assault is “a random despicable act” that’s being investigated as a hate crime.
