Winter rains leave Hawaii free of drought

March 3, 2018

HONOLULU (AP) — Officials say the heavy winter rains across Hawaii have driven away drought statewide.

Hawaii News Now reports a recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor indicates the entire state is drought free.

National Weather Service hydrologist Kevin Kodama says the rains last month helped to eliminate drought in the few remaining areas of the state.

Areas on the Big Island had maintained dry conditions through much of the wet season, causing ranchers to thin their herds because of the lacking grazing lands.

Kodama says the agriculture sector now appears to be in good shape as the state nears its dry season that begins in May.
