Names released in Tuesday machete attack

October 11, 2018

ONA — An Ona man who allegedly attempted to break into another man’s home will face charges after being attacked and injured by the homeowner, who hit him with a machete as he forced his way inside Tuesday morning.

According to Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle, Michael Cupp II, 38, of Ona, will be charged with daytime burglary when he is released from the hospital for allegations surrounding the incident. The person who wielded the machete in the attack, Shannon Steele of Ona, is not expected to be charged.

According to Cabell County Sheriff’s Sgt. K.A. White II, officers were called to a home in the 3400 block of Blue Sulphur Garden Road at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after a man called 911 to say he used a machete and nearly chopped off Cupp’s hand when he allegedly broke into his home.

White said an argument over a business transaction led to the attack. Cupp allegedly had gone to the home to confront Steele, but was told he was not home. When Cupp kicked in the door to the home and entered, he was hit in the hand, head and arm with the machete by Steele.

Cupp then retreated to his home across the road, leaving a trail of blood behind him. He was taken to the hospital by EMS and underwent surgery for his hand injury.

Zerkle said the investigation is ongoing to see if additional charges are necessary.
