Free FroFest brings the funk, soul, blues and rock to Snowbasin Resort
SNOWBASIN — So, what do you get when you mix blues, funk, soul and rock ’n’ roll?
If you’re lucky, you get “FroFest.”
Snowbasin’s free Blues, Brews & BBQ concert series hits high gear this weekend with the rowdy FroFest, an entire afternoon of music featuring four bands that — as Muddy Waters would say — put the “unk” in “funk.”
The concert begins at noon Sunday, July 22, at Snowbasin Resort above Huntsville, at 3925 Snow Basin Road. Andy Frasco and the U.N. headline the mini-festival, with Wild Adriatic, Funk You, and Talia Keys also taking the stage during the afternoon.
At noon, things kick off with Talia Keys, a genre-crossing multi-instrumental “musical powerhouse” from Salt Lake City. Her vocal stylings and flowing storytelling provide a unique flavor to her own brand of soul, funk and rock.
At 1:30 p.m., the party continues with Funk You, a high-energy band from the east side of Augusta, Georgia. Rooted firmly in funk, the band focuses on dance-driven grooves featuring powerful, clean vocals.
Then, at 3 p.m., Wild Adriatic takes the stage. The group has been praised for being rooted in the rowdy spirit of rock ’n’ roll while offering plenty of blues and “tons of soul.” The band combines the three Gs: groove, grit, and guitar-heavy swagger.
Finally, the afternoon FroFest will be anchored with a 4:15 p.m. performance of Andy Frasco and the U.N. The Los Angeles native and his band of musical gypsies have been described as playing “party blues,” but the music goes deeper than that with fragments of soul, funk, rock, roots and Americana.
For children, there are activities and games including a spider jump, climbing wall and playground. Barbecue and other food is available in Earl’s Lodge, and a wide selection of local beers are on tap.
Snowbasin also offers a Kids Adventure Tour on Sunday afternoons for ages 7 to 11. For $15 per child — pre-registration is recommended — parents can drop off their youngsters while they enjoy the concert.
Unlike outside food or beverage, dogs are allowed in the music venue provided they’re on a leash at all times and stay on the grassy areas.
Umbrellas, shade tents, chairs and blankets are also welcome.
