Anne Hathaway tells crowd to ‘tear this world apart’ during speech blasting ‘cisgender privilege’

September 17, 2018

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway told a Washington crowd over the weekend that they must “tear this world apart” in order to rebuild something better for the LGBTQ community.

The star of “The Devil Wears Prada” accepted a National Equality Award Saturday evening before a cheering audience at the Human Rights Campaign’s National Dinner. She punctuated the moment by addressing myths “that has been with us since birth.”

“It is important to acknowledge with the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth,” she said.“That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness.”

Ms. Hathaway said that conversations with her gay brother and time spent with the LGBTQ community changed her perception, The New York Post reported Sunday.

“Let’s tear this world apart and build a better one,” she said.
