DETROIT _ Former Gov. John Engler is resigning as Michigan State’s interim president amid public backlash over his comments about women and girls sexually assaulted by now-imprisoned campus sports doctor Larry Nassar. Engler had resisted earlier pressure to resign. He announced his plans Wednesday in an 11-page letter to the chairwoman of the school’s Board of Trustees in which he said he was stepping down effective next week.
