Escaped Inmates Cornered by Lions

December 8, 1999

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) _ Two inmates who escaped from farm duty at a prison in southern Tanzania gave themselves up after being cornered by lions, a newspaper said Wednesday.

The independent daily Guardian said the two men walked away from the farm at Ngwala prison in Mbeya region Monday and headed into a nearby forest where they came face to face with two lions.

They clambered up a tree, but the lions waited for them at the bottom, Chunya district commissioner Clemency Mbwali told the newspaper. He said a truck frightened the lions off and stopped for the two escapees who asked for a ride back to prison.
