Boyfriend Hacks Teen-age Girl With Samurai

July 25, 1995

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) _ A man attacked his teen-age girlfriend with a samurai sword, cutting two fingers off one hand, nearly severing her other hand and stabbing the blade completely through her abdomen, the sheriff said.

Larry Ray Fitch was arrested at his house in Aurora, about 15 miles from Littleton, a couple of hours after the stabbing Monday. Officers found the 18-inch sword embedded in his chest but didn’t know when he stabbed himself.

Martilynn Checots, 17, survived the attack, which apparently began when she rejected Fitch’s attempts to patch up their relationship, Sheriff Pat Sullivan said. They had dated nearly a year until last month.

Fitch, 21, allegedly forced his way into her house, past her two younger brothers and a girlfriend, chased her into her bedroom and stabbed her as she tried to climb out a window.

``He stabbed her four times and then was swinging the samurai sword at her and sliced off two fingers,″ Sullivan said.

Doctors reattached the girl’s right hand and the fingers to her left hand Tuesday at a hospital in Englewood.

Checots also suffered liver damage from the stab wound and was in serious condition. Fitch was in fair condition.
