Scranton Police Identify Man Who Attempted To Flee In River
SCRANTON — City police have identified the man officers pulled from the Lackawanna River on Friday night.
David Malewicz Jr. faces charges of reckless endangerment, fleeing and providing false identification after police say he jumped in the river after members of the Street Crimes Unit stopped him for questioning.
Officers had watched him for about 30 minutes Friday night when they saw him walking toward an area of known drug activity and stopped him for questioning at Elm Street where it intersects the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail. Malewicz acted nervous, had inconsistencies in his story and eventually jumped into the river. After officers pulled him from the water, Malewicz was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center for treatment. Malewicz, who also had a warrant from Lackawanna County probation, was awaiting arraignment Saturday.
