Mecha Noodle Bar plans downtown Stamford opening
STAMFORD — The southwestern Connecticut Mecha noodle-bar chain is set to soon serve up a restaurant in downtown Stamford.
Its new eatery is under construction at 151 Bedford St., joining a large roster of other establishments in one of the city’s most bustling dining corridors. The new location would complement existing Mecha restaurants in Norwalk, Fairfield and New Haven.
A message left Friday for Mecha was not immediately returned.
Mecha, which means “mom and pop” in Vietnamese, draws from a range of culinary influences.
“Among other things, we do riffs on food that can be found in the streets of southeast Asia,” its website says. “Don’t call us ‘fusion’ or a sushi restaurant; there are plenty of those in Connecticut. We are American-Vietnamese-Japanese-Thai-Chinese-Korean-New-England-Momofuku-Totto-and-Ippudo-inspired.”
Mecha’s arrival cements Bedford Street’s status as one of the city’s top restaurant rows. In the past year and a half, other openings on the street have included Bedford Hall Craft Kitchen & Bar, at 135 Bedford, and Hudson Social, at 128 Bedford, and Roasted Sandwich Co., at 148 Bedford.
The restaurant lineup continues to evolve elsewhere in the downtown. Around Columbus Park, newcomers in the past six months have included Greek restaurant Kouzina, at 223 Main St., and Piezano’s Pizzeria at 245 Main St., and Indian restaurant Adyar Ananda Bhavan, at 1033 Washington Blvd.
Among other noodle bars in the city center, Kano debuted last August at 227 Summer St.
At the same time, local economic development officials are trying to re-invigorate the downtown retail sector.
A pop-up retail program, launched last month by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District, is recruiting temporary tenants to help fill empty storefronts on Bedford Street. The J. Hilburn men’s clothing brand is running a pop-up shop at 95 Bedford St., until June 22, while more pop-ups are planned on the street for next month and later in the year.
