Swede Leads in World Cup Points

HUNDFJALLET, Sweden (AP) _ Swedish favorite Jesper Roennbaeck took over the World Cup points lead Tuesday by winning a dual moguls contest while Norwegian skier Kari Traa captured the women’s event.

Roennbaeck defeated Canadian Dominick Gauthier in the final run at Hundfjallet. He goes into the World Cup Finals next weekend at Altenmarkt, Austria with 268 points and an 8-point lead over Frenchman Fabrice Ougier; Canadians Jean-Luc Brassard and Stephane Rochon, both 24 points back, are within striking distance since skiers, who may discard one of their five results for the season, must keep their Finals points.

In the women’s event Tuesday, Traa edged World Cup leader Candice Gilg of France. In a duel between World Cup rookies, Sandra Schmitt of Germany beat Brooke Ballachey, 18, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., for third place.

Ballachey, second and third in two contests 10 days ago in Chatel, France moved into a tie for second in the duals standings. It’s a far cry from a year ago when she was recovering from surgery after tearing a ligament in her right leg in a training accident.

``Brooke’s skiing more confidently every week. She knows there’s a lot of room for improvement,″ U.S. coach Jeff Good said, ``but she’s barely a year out of knee surgery, so she’s done very well. She’s got a good head on her shoulders and having success come in incremental steps is going to help her a great deal.″

The World Cup Finals schedule includes acro-skiing Friday afternoon, aerials Friday night, individual moguls Saturday and dual moguls Sunday in Altenmarkt, the 1993 World Championships site.
