Tonight: Cy-Fair school board to hear 2019 bond program recommendations

February 4, 2019

Five years after the passage of their previous bond referendum, Cy-Fair ISD may be asking voters’ approval of a proposed 2019 bond program to expand and improve the district.

Tonight, Feb. 4, the CFISD school board will hear a presentation recommending potential bond projects for the district, which may include more bus routes, new facilities and additional safety resources.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the CFISD Instructional Support Center at 10300 Jones Road in Houston.

The presentation will be delivered by members of the Long-Range Planning Committee, a group of CFISD students, staff and community members. The LRPC set out to form plans for the district up to 2025, including a potential bond program. The committee has been meeting since November 2018 to discuss needs for the district based on research provided by CFISD officials.

Julie Hinaman, community co-chair for the LRPC, said the committee used data from the school district to guide their planning.

“They did an in-depth facility assessment looking at student population growth, asset management — like which assets were aging out toward the end of their life cycle — and then using that data, they brought that to us so we could use it to come up with recommendations,” she said.

The district had a bond pass in 2014 for $1.2 billion, which is currently in Phase 6 of implementation in the form of renovations and other projects.

The LRPC’s 2019 bond program recommendation is anticipated to include a new performance arts center by 2020, a new instructional support center by 2022 and $239.1 million in new technology initiatives. Until the board of trustees approves of plans, none of what the LRPC may suggest is official for the district.

The school board will decided on Feb. 11 whether to call a bond election for the funds needed to complete these projects. If approved, the board would hold a joint election with the county on May 4.
