Rutland County businesses receive $700,000 workforce grant

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Department of Economic Development has awarded six Rutland County businesses nearly $700,000 in grants for workforce training.

The Rutland Herald reports Republican Gov. Phil Scott said in a statement last week strengthening the state’s workforce was a priority for his administration. The individual grants range from $13,000 to over $200,000. They will help train 470 employees in the region.

The Rutland-based custom furniture maker New England Woodcraft was one of the six companies that received grant funding. Company president Gary Marini says the grant helps keep employees up to speed as manufacturing equipment becomes more sophisticated.

Vermont employers have struggled to attract skilled workers. Workforce experts say the training grants help address that gap and develop better internal leadership.
