Teen girl shot by backseat passenger while driving
A 17-year-old girl was shot by a back-seat passenger as she was driving Monday night on the Northeast Side, San Antonio police said.
SAPD Sgt. John Carey said the girl was shot at about 8:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of Sunrise Crest.
The girl was driving a black Chevrolet Equinox with three other passengers, all of them 18 years old.
Two of the passengers in the back, a man and a woman, were playing with a gun when it went off, investigators said.
“They’re all saying it was an accident,” Carey said.
The bullet went through the driver’s seat and struck the teen in her lower back, police said.
She was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center where police said she is in non-life threatening condition.
The man sitting directly behind the girl ran from the scene before police arrived.
“That’s the problem we’re having,” Carey said. “So we don’t know whether it was truly an accident or not.”
Carey said police are searching for the passenger.
