Man Kills Wife, Severs Young Daughter’s Hand, Kills Self

June 16, 1995

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) _ A Laotian immigrant, apparently depressed over his family’s assimilation into U.S. culture, killed his wife and severed the hand of his young daughter before committing suicide, police said.

The wounded girl, whose age was estimated at 7 to 10, was listed in serious condition today after surgeons successfully reattached her right hand, said Peg Olson, spokeswoman for St. Elizabeth Hospital.

The child also suffered facial fractures and lacerations in Thursday’s attack, Olson said.

The victims’ names were withheld by police, who have sought interpreters to help in the investigation, police spokesman Ray Reimann said.

Relatives said the father felt disgraced that his teen-age daughter was living with her boyfriend. He was depressed by ``kids doing things not typical of Hmong culture,″ said Mai Lot, a relative.

Reimann said a ``large cutting instrument″ was recovered. He did not know how the father killed himself.

A mailman discovered the victims at their home 75 miles northwest of Milwaukee.
