One Dead, Eight Lost in Arizona Desert
SELLS, Ariz. (AP) _ One Guatemalan died and eight others were reported lost in the searing Arizona desert after sneaking across the Mexican border.
Three other Guatemalans were picked up Wednesday evening, slightly dehydrated but in good condition, the Border Patrol said.
The three told authorities a member of their party had died and that eight others were missing, said Lt. Warren Alter of the Pima County Sheriff’s Office.
″They backtracked and found the body,″ Alter said Thursday.
Authorities expressed concern for the safety of those still in the desert - where temperatures soared to well over 100 degrees.
Pima County deputies and police from the Tohono O’odham Reservation were aiding the Border Patrol in the search, Alter said.
The Guatemalans said they left home on June 12 with smugglers who guided them to the border for $1,000 each. They crossed the border Saturday and were trying to follow an old smugglers’ route. They said they hoped to find work in Arizona’s citrus groves.
