Ancient Statues Found Off Greece

March 19, 2001

ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ A group of shepherds on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Kalymnos have uncovered nine marble statues believed to be 2,300 years old, authorities said Monday.

The Hellenistic sculptures _ life-size male and female figures _ were well-preserved, though missing heads and legs. They were discovered alongside dozens of other statue parts, including heads that may belong to the figures.

They were handed over to the local museum, the Culture Ministry said.

The three shepherds found the statues on Saturday while they were digging to set up a fence. Archaeologists are due to travel to the island from Athens to examine the finds.
