Dr. H.A. Tillmann Hein Receives 2018 TSA Distinguished Service Award

January 8, 2019

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan 8, 2019--The Texas Society of Anesthesiologists named H.A. Tillmann Hein, MD, PhD as its Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2018 for 30 years of volunteerism and contribution to the field of anesthesiology. Dr. Hein is a graduate of Seymour High School (Class of 1963) and is married to Rebecca (Becky) Bishop (Class of 1964).

“I am beyond honored to receive this award from the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists,” said Dr. Hein. “Just as I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve the practice of anesthesiology, my students and physicians throughout my career.” From early in his career, he has taken advantage of opportunities to pass on clinical knowledge and skills to students, residents and fellows to help them become better physicians.

Dr. Hein is a founding member of Metropolitan Anesthesia Consultants, LLP and currently serves on the Compliance Committee as well as the Metro Political Action Committee. He also maintains an appointment as Full Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

After graduating with a degree in pharmacy from the Westfälische-Wilhelms-Universität, Dr. Hein obtained his medical degree and Ph.D. in medicine from the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany. Board-certified in the European Union and by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Hein completed anesthesiology residencies in both Germany and at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX.

In the advocacy arena, Dr. Hein has worked to get his colleagues involved politically. His efforts helped at least three Texas anesthesiologists to become legislators and/or gubernatorial appointees. One of them ultimately become Texas Commissioner of Health and Human Services and another currently serves in the US Congress. A California anesthesiologist rose to Chief Medical Officer of the US Department of Health and Human Services. A Missouri anesthesiologist served in the Senate of that state and a Pennsylvania anesthesiologist currently serves as County Commissioner. Dr. Hein has been called from the floor of Congress three times to solicit advice on a pending vote.

Dr. Hein is an active member of numerous scientific societies including: American Society of Anesthesiologists (Delegate to House of Delegates from Texas, Committee on Quality Management and Departmental Administration, Committee on International Collaboration), Texas Society of Anesthesiologists (President 2011-2012), Dallas County Anesthesiology Society (President 1991-1992), International Anesthesia Research Society, Society for Cardiovascular Anesthesia, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anästhesie und Intensivmedizin, Ärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe, Internationale Sepsis Gesellschaft (Life Member), Sepsis Stiftung (Founder, Member Kuratorium 2011-date), Rudolf-Frey-Gesellschaft (by invitation), Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, National Physicians Council for Healthcare Policy (Co-Chair for Anesthesiology 2015-date), Texas Surgical Quality Collaborative (Chair of the Board 2011-date).

With all the charitable and advocacy work Dr. Hein has been involved in over the years, taking care of patients remains his chief concern.
