KIEV, Ukraine (AP) _ Thousands of people gathered in the city of Lviv on Thursday to remember the victims of an air-show crash that killed at least 76 people, news agencies and TV reports said.
The ceremony was held 40 days after the disaster, in keeping with a Christian tradition. About 8,000 people attended, including victims’ relatives, friends, and city authorities, the Interfax news agency reported.
The pilots of an Su-27 fighter jet were trying to pull off a difficult maneuver at low altitude when their plane nicked the ground, sliced a parked plane and plowed into a crowd at the military air show July 27.
Officials announced earlier this month that 76 were confirmed dead in the air show crash. They said previous incorrect reports of 85 dead resulted from confusion over identifying victims’ remains.
More than 150 people were injured, including the pilots, who ejected and survived. Twenty-eight people remained hospitalized Thursday.
