Northwest Houston area defensive players set for breakout year

Athletes around Texas are set to begin another long journey with football practice nearly underway.

Numerous NW area players signed to play college ball last year including former Cy Springs safety Leon O’Neal Jr., Texas A&M signee, Westfield defensive tackle Keondre Coburn, Texas signee, Cy Fair cornerback Erick Hallett, Pitt signee, and Spring strong defensive end Willie Smith, Houston signee.

Heading into the 2018-19 school year, many players will be looking to make the most out of the season and carry their team to the playoffs.

Corien Azema, senior

Langham Creek

Defensive back

The Northwestern commit, 94 tackles, two interceptions and scored four non-offensive touchdowns last year, earned unanimous first-team all-district honors at safety as a junior. As a sophomore, the three-star athlete was a second-team all-district selection at LB. Azema also had offers from Houston, Arkansas, Duke and Indiana.

Marcus Banks, senior

Spring Dekaney

Defensive back

The LSU commit, who has great hands and athleticism at his position, earned first-team all-district honors as a junior. The three-star athlete committed to LSU last June. Banks chose the Tigers over Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Auburn.

Kasen Handal, senior

Tomball

Defensive back

Handal, who had nine interceptions last year, was an AP Class 5A first-team all-state and first-team all-district selection as a junior. The 5-10, 180-pound safety played at Galena Park as a sophomore.

Gerald Irons III, senior

Klein Oak

Defensive tackle

The three-star athlete verbally committed to Army last June. The 6-foot, 275-pounder was destined to play football. Irons’ father played for Nebraska and his grandfather played in the NFL for 10 years. His uncles Jarrett and Grant played for Michigan and Notre Dame, respectively.

Josh White, junior

Linebacker

White is a 6-1, 200-pound outside linebacker from Houston. He had 119 tackles as a sophomore. The three-star athlete has offers from Alabama, Baylor, Houston, Duke, Nebraska, Texas Tech and SMU.

Coleby Hamm, senior

Klein

Linebacker

Hamm, 86 tackles and 11 sacks last year, is an inside linebacker from Spring. The two-star athlete earned first-team 15-6A All-District in 2017. He has offers from Lamar, Incarnate Word and McNeese State.

Jaylen Stanford, senior

Spring Westfield

Defensive back

The two-star athlete is a 5-11, 175-pound cornerback from Houston. The playmaker has offers from Incarnate Word, Air Force, Liberty, Navy and Army.

Braedon Nutter, junior

Tomball Memorial

Defensive lineman

Nutter is a defensive tackle from Tomball. The 6-3, 285-pound three-star athlete received his first offer from Colorado in May.

Rance McInnis, senior

Cy Ranch

Defensive back

The free safety, 53 tackles and five interceptions last year, earned first-team all-district honors as a junior. In 2016, he also earned a first-team all-district selection. The three-star athlete has offers from Air Force, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Texas State.

Harrison White, senior

Klein

Defensive end

The 6-6, 255-pound DE committed to Baylor back in May. The three-star athlete had offers from Boston College, Houston, Texas Tech, Nebraska, South Florida and Wisconsin.

Titus Howard, senior

Spring

Defensive lineman

The 6-3, 240-pounder earned 16-6A first-team all-defense as a junior. Howard, 40 tackles and four sacks last year, will bring veteran experience to a young Lions defense.
