Father Pleads Guilty To Wounding Son With Unwanted Tattoo

February 26, 1992

BERRYVILLE, Va. (AP) _ A man who held down his 7-year-old son while his brother gave the boy a painful tattoo pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful wounding.

A plea agreement calls for William Joseph Dennison, 29, to serve a year in prison and three years’ probation for the tattooing of his son, William Joseph ″Billy″ Dennison Jr.

But Dennison could end the probation earlier by coming up with enough money to pay a plastic surgeon to remove the tattoo from the boy’s arm. The tattoo spells Billy’s name in blue capital letters.

That provision irked Circuit Judge James Berry, who postponed sentencing until April 7.

″I do not think the defendant should be able to buy his way out of probation,″ Berry said.

Dennison’s 23-year-old brother, Francis James Dennison, was convicted last week of malicious wounding. The jury recommended 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine for him.

Billy Dennison testified his father held him down while his uncle pressed an ink-filled needle up and down into his arm.
